On dating sites, would your rather get a 'not interested' message or no message at all?

I am on a few dating websites and I am not entirely sure how to conduct not being interested in the people that are messaging me. Typically, I do not respond at all. When I do respond politely, sometimes I get rude messages back. When I message other people that aren't interested in me, I honestly don't care whether I get a response or none at all. Maybe that's just being desensitized from being on sites for a while but I'd like to know what other people think.

1. ha i think the whole NO MESSAGE AT ALL one cuz then you can imagine that the guy died or somethin and couldnt respond :)
