What do you think about internet dating sites?

I am asking just out of interest. It seems I see couples every day that met on internet dating or social sites. It seems really strange to me and you hear so many horror stories and how people just lie most of the time. I'm happy for those that it has worked out for, but is it really worth the risk? p.s. I am not asking because I want to use one. I am happily taken :)
