LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The popular online dating service eHarmony was sued on Thursday for refusing to offer its services to gays, lesbians and bisexuals. A lawsuit alleging discrimination based on sexual orientation was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Linda Carlson, who was denied access to eHarmony because she is gay. Lawyers bringing the action said they believed it was the first lawsuit of its kind against eHarmony, which has long rankled the gay community with its failure to offer a "men seeking men" or "women seeking women" option. They were seeking to make it a class action lawsuit on behalf of gays and lesbians excluded from the dating service. eHarmony was founded in 2000 by evangelical Christian Dr. Neil Clark Warren and had strong early ties with the influential religious conservative group Focus on the Family. It has more than 12 million registered users, and heavy television advertising has made it one of the nation's biggest Internet No Ruling this was just announced!!

I think they should be, I had no idea that was happening. But yes, they should be. In several other couple searching engines they offer it for both hetero- and homosexual orientations. Why not eHarmony?
I think it is pretty moronic and it will probably get tossed out of the courts. It is a private website, it can do what it wants. As a gay man, I know that eharmony caters to the straight community, that's why I use other websites. These people just need to get over it. By the way people, welcome to the real world, not everyone accepts us. I'm not saying that is right, I'm just saying that is the way things are at this point.
when people arnt happy until they have access to everything to push their beliefs -you gotta wonder what the world is coming to-maybe they will sue people for getting married to the opposite gender too? well Romans 1 says it comes from being unthankful and worshiping the created instead of the creator in rejecting Jesus salvation. He's for Focus on the Family he can't claim they weren't against us! There is so much proof of their hatred towards us! I hope everyone in that class action suits gets money and then finds their soul mate. As I'm sure both would give Dr Warren a heart attack... gays in love and him losing money. :D
Well, Jay, what do you think? Personally I think that being a private, religious organization they have the right to cater to whom they wish.

I believe that article also said that it's against California state law to discriminate against homosexuals. If you want to use Plessy v. Ferguson logic, then it's perfectly fine for a "private" website to discriminate because it's not wrong for the individual to have prejudices. Of course, I'm more of a Brown v. Topeka board chick myself. Regardless of your views on the homosexuality community, eHarmony is breaking a law in California and should be prosecuted. I'd have to say that I believe that a guy involved with a fundamentalist organization is ignoring the GLBT sector on purpose. Personally, I also believe they should be exposed and opened to debate. It's pretty disheartening to see the best dating website {most thorough and proven} exclude a good chunk of the population from its 'quest' to create life-long matches. If one of the biggest "problems" with gays is lack of commitment, shouldn't they use their opportunities to encourage it? Ironically, I was just wondering the other day why eHarmony has no gay testimonials. Oops.
That's just stupid. Eharmony is solely dedicated to str8 people, just like Gaydar is solely dedicated to gays and lesbians. I don't see a "discrimination" here.
a while back i had went to e-harmony.com just for kicks because their commercials were coming on non-stop! i was very very disappointed when it asked me what gender i was, and when i said "i'm a woman" it automatically entered "searching for a man" and i was like "this is BS i'm not searching for a man! how dare this site put words in my mouth!" lol i was a bit dramatic. any way. very much let down by the site. but i do believe that this web site is owned and financed by a man and HIS beliefs... not the state.. this is not a legal issue.. i don't understand why people would sue him.. it's his site.. let him do what he wants with it... suing him won't change his beliefs.. but i am also not saying this guy isn't making the big bucks.. because he is off this site... and i'm pretty sure sooner or later he's going to fall for the money and realize how much more money he could make if he opened his site up to the gay community. mostly because BY FACT there are fewer homosexuals (well.. OUT and open homosexuals) in the world than hetero's.. which means that it's really hard to meet people and extremely hard to meet people that are compatible to you. just because you're gay sally jo doesn't mean that i automatically like you. lol sorry i had to add that because my friend said the other day "how come you don't like so and so.. she's gay" "umm.. just because i'm gay.. doesn't mean i LIKE ALL GAY GIRLS" gosh. straight people are so darn funny. i get a kick out of them. any way. it's just really hard to meet people.. and i think this guy will come around when he realizes the money he's missing out on. money may over come his beliefs, religion, yadda yadda yadda.. lets see how strong of a person this guy is. and i'll applaud him both ways. if he does cave in.. then.. good for him.. and good for the homosexual community. and if he doesn't i applaud him also for sticking to his guns under all that pressure. yay for the e-harmony dude. i'm out
I think it serves as yet another example of how society is prejudiced against GLBTs. It, yet again, gives headline to our cause.
I just read about this. I am gay myself but I think that they pushed this a little too far. It is a dating servise just for hetrosexual couples. That's just the way it is. i'm sure that Gay.com is refusing servise to straight couples. I think that the dating servise can decide who they want to be of servise to. I think the issue was thery were discriminating against gays and saying stuff
Question: Was there a ruling on this subject? if so, which side won? I feel as if eharmony IS being predigest against gay and lesbian people. I do see that as being unfair.
